National Badminton Week September 7th to the 13th

National Badminton Week is scheduled for September 7th to the 13th this year. The week is quickly approaching, and we at Badminton Ireland would like to keep you up to date on the events we have planned. Additionally, we hope you will take the following information and share it with local area. Your involvement to help promote badminton around the country is greatly appreciated.

First and foremost, this week will be in collaboration with the Irish Sports Council and the European Week of Sport in Ireland. Any and all events hosted by Badminton Ireland, clubs, schools, or other associations can register their event at this link: http://ec.europa.eu/sport/week/take-part/register-event_en.htm for increased coverage. Events can be listed on social media using the hash-tag #BeActive. It would be great if you could help advertise this event in your local area so that local people who play and do not play know what is going on.

Our overall goal this year is to increase awareness of and participation in the sport of badminton. We hope to do so by involving all branches, counties, clubs, Local Sports Partnerships and schools in the events we are planning. Our main promotion this year will be the social media based Badminton Ireland 60 Second Challenge. We will also be hosting badminton exhibitions around different areas in the country. Another aim of ours is to increase youth involvement by incorporating our Teicnic programme and Shuttle-Time programme in schools around the country. Finally, we hope to involve charity work in our schedule. We have been in contact with Breast Cancer Ireland and hope to partner our events with their charity. We intend to raise some much needed funds for this great charity along with promoting badminton across the country.  All events and updates can be followed online using the hash-tag #natbadmintonweek.

While we hope that you are interested in the above events, we would also like to request ideas, suggestions, or any related comments for National Badminton Week. We are all striving for success, and your involvement will set us up for greater results. In addition, if you could please share the above information on your local website and schools along with a request to anyone who is planning an event for National Badminton Week that they share these events with Badminton Ireland and the European Week of Sport via the above link, it would be greatly appreciated. We know that many clubs and schools have not yet started back but we would like to get this information out so that they are aware of all the events that are going to be arranged during National Badminton Week.

Thank you for taking the time to read through our ideas for National Badminton Week, and for sharing your ideas as well. We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Badminton Ireland

Irish Sports Council Volunteer Training Programme

Volunteer Training Programme

Background

In July 2014, the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government adopted the Dormant Accounts Action Plan 2014 under the Dormant Accounts (Amendment) Act 2012.  The Action Plan outlined measures under a number of Government Departments, totalling over €19 million to be disbursed from the Dormant Accounts Fund.  The Plan included the following two sports measures submitted by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport:

1.        Community Sport and Physical Activity Hubs

2.        National Sport Education and Training Hub

The plan can be viewed at the following address:

http://www.environ.ie/en/Community/DormantAccounts/PublicationsDocuments/FileDownLoad,38338,en.pdf

Funding was granted to the ISC for the two sports measures in 2015.

Volunteer Support Programme

As part of the National Sport Education and Training Hub measure, there are a range of approved programmes and projects. One of these is a Volunteer Support Programme.  The ISC acknowledges that there is a significant need within National Governing Bodies for volunteer learning and development support. It is recognised that these volunteers operate at all levels, from local clubs up to regional and national level roles within an NGB.  We believe that assistance for this particular demographic will result in enhanced skills for the volunteers and an increased likelihood in their retention as active participants in sports and physical activity. Details of the 2015 Volunteer Training Programme are attached below and volunteers may book themselves on to course’s in the links attached.

Community Coaching Press Release

Have you got time to get a coaching qualification in Athletics, Rugby or Soccer?

Leitrim Sports Partnership in association with Leitrim County Council, Irish Sports Council, Dormant Accounts Fund, Department of Social Protection, Connacht Rugby (IRFU), the FAI and Athletics Ireland would like to invite applications from unemployed people who would have the time to commit to two days a week training to become a fully qualified athletics, soccer and rugby coaches. The programme is open to men and women who can see the potential in becoming a part time or full time coach. Potential participants may be entitled to retain their social welfare payments subject to certain conditions.

“Community Coaching Programme” is an exciting new initiative developed in 2009 piloted by Leitrim County Council. While an interest in sport is desirable, it is not essential as full training on rugby, soccer and athletics coaching skills as well as child protection, Occupational first aid and motivational skills is included. In addition, Leitrim County Enterprise Board will provide a module on how to explore setting up your own business, marketing and presentation skills. All of which would help participants to identify possible employment opportunities after the 12 week programme.

According to Declan Boyle, Sports Coordinator of Leitrim Sports Partnership the focus of “Community Coaching programme” will be to tutor people as coaches with the aim of providing them with an option of setting up on a self-employed basis or to encourage the participants into sport and recreational career at the end of the coaching period.

The programme will consist of a 12 week course starting in September operating for two days a week. The course will include one day coaching training and one day of ancillary training in the above mentioned areas. The coaching training will take place in the schools, community and youth groups and the ancillary training will take place in the offices of Leitrim County Council. The added benefit would be the availability of an increased number of coaches to work with the various schools, clubs and youth groups across a number of sports.

Councillor, Enda Stenson Chairperson of the Leitrim Sports Partnership said “This unique programme has been made possible through agencies working together. The partnership with the Leitrim Sports Partnership, Leitrim County Council, Irish Sports Council, Dormant Accounts Fund, Leitrim Enterprise Board, Connacht Rugby, the FAI, Athletics Ireland and the Dept of Social Protection has been the key to the success of this programme”.  He then went on to say “We have had fabulous support from the sporting bodies and the all the Agencies and like the previous programme there will be no doubt some amazing success stories from the programme. Rugby, Soccer and Athletics are all sports that are easy to play and appeal to people of all ages and different walks of life”.
